Definitive Technology's new StudioMonitors are very compact high-performance, magnetically shielded full-range bookshelf speakers. Their non-resonant monocoque cabinets feature Definitive's elegant piano-gloss black lacquer endcap/wraparound grille cloth styling. Enclosed are 1-inch pure aluminum dome tweeters perfectly blended to Definitive's signature cast-basket high-definition bass/midrange drivers (6.5-inch for the SM450, 5.25-inch for the SM350) tightly coupled to planar-technology pressure-driven, side-mounted subwoofers (10-inch for the SM450, 8-inch for the SM350). The StudioMonitor's sonic performance is truly stunning, producing huge razor-sharp, three-dimensional sonic images combined with incredible detail, ruler-flat frequency response and rich, full bass. Because the StudioMonitors are true full-range speakers with extended low-frequency characteristics, they deliver superb performance both as stand-alone speakers as well as when combined with separate subwoofers.

We needed to upgrade our system and went shopping for front speakers for our surround set up. We played Klipsch, Viennas, Definitives and a few others using action video, guitar concerts and movies featuring dialog. For the price point under $500 these were unquestionably the best to our ears. They came as a surprise - we are Klipsch fans, but these really did better within our price range. Love 'Em! In contrast, we did choose a Klipsch for the center channel. Dialog is the job of the center in movies. I have had these speakers for a little over a month. I bought these for computer speakers and I am running them through an Onkyo receiver. The bass is very impressive for such a small speaker and they have a very warm sound. I do have a sub hooked up with these which just fills in the lows that much better. Music, tv and games all sound very nice. The highs are very sharp directly in front of these speakers but smooth out away from direct center. I have taken a star off for this because it is to much of a change in sound. They easily fill a large room with sound and I am more than happy with this purchase.
