5Very good, very efficient
By M. Rich
I have owned three sets of Control 1s over the years. Always liked them and have several times bought other speakers and brought home, only to decide after comparing head to head, that the Control 1's are superior. I highly recommend them because the sound is great, they are indestructible, and shielded, so you can place anywhere (next to your amp, TV, or a PC Display).First pair were stolen (thieves stole only the Control 1s! they had good taste!), so I bought new pair of the Control 1 eXtremes, the more consumer oriented version. Loved them and have had for a couple years. Recently bought another pair of Control 1's, this time the Pros. Most people won't tell much difference between either version, especially at low-mid level listening volumes. The basic differences are that the Pro's are 4 ohms. They will play louder than the eXtremes. The Pro's also have protection against overload. Bottom line is that if you want something that can occasionally jam very loud, the Pros are a bit better choice but the eXtremes will work just as well for most people and are a better choice if you plan on using them as a surround speaker (because they are 8 ohms and will match your others speakers better, load wise). But overall, either version of the Control 1's are a great choice. Choose Pro's if you want to jam them as a single stereo pair, choose the eXtremes if you want 8 ohm speaker compatibility.

5Been using these for well over 20 years...
By Russell Monty Rose
As the titles states, I've used these particular modeled speakers for well over 20+ years & have never looked back. Granted, the installs have been as varied as studios, HOWs, to source point sound effects like crackling fire, rats scurrying, pots boiling or electricity zapping for one of Universal's many haunted houses & believe me when the descriptor says RUGGED, it indeed means rugged. They indeed handled the 150 watt threshold & dare I say more, but only from a clean & stable amp. Obviously, anything over the recommended rating is wrong, but in reviewing this product, I'm just stating my relationship with the product... and the facts are, the crowd gets rowdy, we (audio goons) get a little negligent & for the most part these JBLs stood up to the abuse. Even the metal grill can withstand a pretty good kick to the face (as an individual who was ejected from a venue for vandalizing my gear can attest to). Again, I don't recommend it, but if you accidentally drop one of these off of the desk or from regular hip height; it's my opinion you're probably not going to hurt it (sans some cosmetic dings, dependent on what kind of floor you dropped it on).The JBL Control 1 Pros are for the professional (even though my/our conduct might have come into question on occasion) even though they're priced for the consumer. What better time for someone to experiment with 'true professional' equipment & experience what the difference is. I.e., the merit in expense for better A/V equipment juxtaposed against cheaper (or in some cases comparably priced) consumer electronics.Sure, there are always caveats for your money being spent wisely, but these speakers are certainly not money thrown away. So, quit putzing around. Get a good quality Professional amplifier, these speakers & enjoy. It will most certainly be money belligerently well spent.TAKE NOTE!!! For those folks looking for nut rattling lows & earth shaking tremors... That's not what these speakers were designed for. You're going to have to spend some more money for that privilege. These speakers have SOME bass response, down to 100Hz, but that's it. Not really meant for rattling your teeth. I would recommend looking into a second amp & a 12 inch sub for that duty. Sure, it sounds like boats load more cash, but if done right it really isn't. As a matter of fact, the whole 'system' might be built for less than $800... and it could just about kill the neighbors, yet quickly load up in the car for fast get away!

5JBL Control 1 Studio Monitors
By A. Thomas
I have to admit that after being a Carvin fan for the past 2 decades, I didn't believe that anything could come close to the price/performance benchmark Carvin had set. I have recently changed my mind. These monitors absolutely ROCK! Crystal clear highs, and driving midrange are what you'd expect -- but these pack a ported bass punch that you DON'T! I hooked these up to a 200WX2 RMS amp, and with the help of a subwoofer, they filled the entire room with a confident "ba-boom". If you're even looking at these, stop wondering, and purchase with confidence.
