Some criticized the Korg R3 for the vocoder, but I didn't buy it just for the vocoder, any more than I bought the MicroKorg for the same reason. What I bought the R3 for is how much punch this synth has for such a small synth. It's a bit bigger than the MicroKorg, but still very lightweight and easy to carry around. Let me tell you that if you love electronica and techno you are bound to enjoy the R3. This thing is meant for that kind of music. Lots of great '70s, '80s, and '90s sounds, plus an arpeggiator to get those great techno rhythms. It's also capable of that digital metallic synth sound and several sounds included are reminiscent of the Yamaha DX-7, although not an exact clone. You get many different great polyphonic sounds, sound effects to blow you away, lead sounds, and imitations of the Wurlitzer electric piano and clavinet (although you can still tell it's a synth). Unlike the MicroKorg or its successor the XL, these are full-sized keys. The vocoder works great for me, I don't always expect to understand what I'm saying through the vocoder, but then if you like Kraftwerk, you probably want it for those Kraftwerk-like vocoder sounds. I know there are superior vocoders out there, but I was interested in the synth features, and I consider the vocoder icing on the cake, just like the MircoKorg. I have only just begun on this synth, so there is still a lot I have yet to unlock. I am really loving how synths have became smaller, but loses none of that power. If you're looking for a purely analog experience on the line of a Minimoog or ARP 2600, look elsewhere, but for the rest of us, you will love the R3. It's more expensive than the MicroKorg, but not that much more, it's still very much entry-level (price-wise), but nothing entry-level sound-wise! So if you're looking for a portable synth that doesn't take up much room and looking for some great sounds meant for techno and electronica, you won't go wrong here.

This is a professional keyboard, so if you want some great sounds at an affordable price, this could be perfect for you.Very transportable; incredible sounds; knobs that allow for adjusting sounds; multi-effects processor; vocoder.I could go on and on. This keyboard comes in very handy, and I've used it for rock, contemporary, R&B, worship, etc.You'll be impressed by the sound of this keyboard. It's small, but packs a huge punch.

The Korg R3 is great if you have a creative mind and patience. If your looking for a plug and play synth with unique presets, then not so much. Thing is you are able to create your own sounds, which I have done and had huge success with. The previous reviews knock the vocoder. If your buying this for the vocoder your most likely making lame music. I've used or rather misused the vocoder and have had some really strong successes. I think people who gravitate toward glitch hop, etc, will be very happy with this synth. It also comes with software that enables you to edit the sounds with a much more used friendly UI than four knobs. Some of the other Korg synths don't allow you to build your own sounds, this does.
