Two months ago I got my EL34 equipped Dynaco ST-70. No doubt the vintage Mullard xf2 and xf3 production finals in it contributed to the superb sound. While enjoying the essentially transparent quality of this fine old audiophile rig I began to search out prices for NOS Mullards as backups. The NOS prices where eye popping! So instead I tried three different current offerings of the EL34 matched quads. The EL34EH was superb for vocals and acoustical guitars. The =C= EL34 had a seemingly limitless bottom end.But I wanted what most tube audiophiles want: minimal distortion and that wonderful tube sound. The Mullard EL34 Reissue from New Sensor (Saratov, Russia) has hit a home run! First off, when you see one of these tubes up close and personal for the first time you will see a well made piece with elegant silk screening. I find they look better in person that their photographs suggest. Once installed they are easy to bias and once adjusted there seems no need to readjust unless you take the amp somewhere else where the mains voltage is notably different. As for the sound, it just the best. It is balanced and warm without a hint of booming or the slightest listening fatigue. I will soon be ordering another set of Mullard EL34 Reissues as backup. If you are using EL34's as an audiophile I strongly recommend this one!
