One of the pitfalls of buying over the internet is that you cannot handle the item before you buy. The item descriptions are often cryptic (or non-extant), and most of the details that a potential customer would want to know are left out. Before I rate this item, I'm going to describe it carefully so that you can know what you are getting before you buy.This is a white, cloth-covered helmet; it seems to be made of plastic (which would explain the smell. At least one other reviewer mentioned a gasoline smell; to me it smells more like new plastic, but I can see what they mean. The smell wasn't very strong on the one I bought.) The inside is green cloth, with a plastic and vinyl headband that adjusts by means of velcro to help the helmet fit smaller heads. If you have a large hat size, like mine (7 1/2), this helmet will be a bit small; I can wear it, but I cannot lean it forward to shade my eyes. There is a decorative "chin-strap" over the front brim; it is made of cheap-looking vinyl and cannot used.Pros:Solid plastic helmet; attractive white canvas cover and authentic-looking green interior.Easily adjustable headband for people with medium-sized heads.Cons:Plastic and vinyl construction; will not stand up to daily use.Unusable chin-strap made of cheap vinyl.Inadequate vents.Over all, if you want a pith helmet for a costume, this will probably work fine for you. It looks great unless you are studying it up close, and it would make a fine part of a British Imperial costume. I suppose there really aren't that many people like myself who would actually wear one of these every day working outside, so this "pith helmet" is perfectly adequate for what most people will want it for. I bought it to use as a real hat, though; and for that it is almost useless.

Well, we thought it would look silly wearing this, but everyone likes it a lot! Seems the design has been accepted and well liked for way over a hundred years! It comes in handy too in the hot Summer's sun when we are clamming, fishing or crabbing and I want to keep my head cool and shaded. There's are vents in the dome of the helmet which were cleverly put there to keep you cool and it really works. Nothing like old fashioned ingenuity! I would recommend this. It's fun to wear. Nice looking, comfortable and light too.

My 9 years son wanted the helmet, as he loves to watch movies about the zulu war and other victorian wars. The helmet is nice and apart of a minor bump it arrived OK. My son is now ready to ship out to the Sudan under Lord Kitchener to avenge Gral. Gordon, and eager to give hell to the Fuzzy-wuzzies at the battle of Omdurman! I would recommend the purchase of the helmet.
