By T
Through-the-skin medications, such as for nicotine-delivery, birth control, fentanyl, bladder control, blood pressure, all use clear plastic patches that patients are supposed to stick to their skin someplace and wear as long as 72 hours before replacing them. These patches can stick well sometimes, but other times they come off within a few hours, getting lost in bedding or sticking to shirts or other clothing. Replacing a patch before it has expired can be expensive and possibly a major problem if a prescription strictly limits the number of patches allowed to be disbursed in a given amount of time. These (mcs2304 medline 50 ea/bx dressing, transparent, suresite, 4x4, 5") dressings are the answer. Medline Suresite Transparent Film Dressing - 4" x 45", Window - Qty of 50 - Model MSC2304They tell you not to, but what I had to do was to first wipe the skin area with Isopropyl alcohol (90 pct, not the 70 pct rubbing alcohol)Then let that air dry and wait about 30 minutes so the skin and alcohol does not interract with the medication. Then I apply the patch, following the directions that come with it.Then I use a permament marker to Sanford Permanent Sharpie Fine Point Marker (30001DZ) to date stamp the patch by writing a two-letter code e.g. MO for Monday TH for Thursday. Then a helper peels the paper backing from the Suresite dressing and applies it over the patch. The dressing is centered directly over the patch. It extends around the patch and covers the patch completely.I have worn this combination through showers, even gone through my Fitness Center steam room and the dressing/patch remain stuck to me. I had a lot of problems at the beginning with patches becoming unstuck. My skin does occasionally become red and itches, just from not being constantly exposed to the air.Usually this goes away quickly after the patch is removed at the end of the patch's lifespan. When it doesn't I spray the area with fluticasone propionate (FloNase)(a decongestant inhaler) once after the patch is removed. This helps the itching and quickly heals any irritation. The doctor suggested to me to spray the area with FloNase just before applying the patch, taking advantage of the decongestant's slight stickiness the occurs before it completely dries. Flonase requires a prescription. But ask your doctor or nurse practictioner or pharmacist for advice. This works for me. I have no idea whether it would work for you.But this system works for me, who is damned to have to wear patches forever. And the price charged here, less than $1 per dressing, is the best price I could find.(NOTE:-- For some reason Amazon or its supplier sticks a $6.74 shipping charge on top of the price of this item. So it is about $50 per box. This is subtly done.)
